In the words of the physicist Albert Einstein: “There are no great discoveries or great progress so long as there is an unhappy child on the earth.“ Of course I can’t compare myself to Albert Einstein, but I take his words to heart – both as a father of three and as someone whose life depends on discoveries and progress. When doctors diagnosed me with chronic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickening
of the heart muscle) in late 1998, both my life and my sporting career were at stake. I realised that I had to do something to help other people in future. Children shouldn’t have to suffer from heart conditions throughout their life – which is why I set up the Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Conditions. This Foundation is very close to my heart. I want to use it to support selected projects which aim to make children’s lives worth living again. In this way, I would like to share some of the good fortune I have experienced in my life.
